It was very bleak and overcast when we gathered at the dock to take the boat to take the bus to take the boat that we would be on for the next day and a half. There were 11 of us all total, which made for a very small and friendly crowd. We all got on very well and there were a lot of laughs throughout the cruise. Our skipper, Chris, was terribly efficient and his son, Trevis, is the first mate, chief cook and bottle washer. They own and operate Deep Cove Charters. Both the preliminary boat ride and the bus ride were extraordinary by themselves. Even when it started to rain, the views were amazing.Going on board the Sea Finn, we got settled in our cabin which wasn't much but it was only for one night. We spent much of the afternoon oohing and aahing and attempting to take pictures. Lunch was brought out around 1pm and it was delicious. Just caught crayfish as big as your fist with salad and all sorts of goodies - as much as you could stand to eat.
The morning colors were unbelievable until the clouds took hold. We had a casual breakfast and headed back to Manapouri after a morning cruise. Tried looking for dolphins again but no luck. Just one lonely penguin.
We arrived at our B&B in Gore around 2. This place is stunning. It is high up on a hill - so the views are incredible. We have our own suite upstairs and it is very restful. We chatted with our hosts for a bit and then headed into town. Drove around and scoped out the river for Geoff's fishing excursion. He bought a license and we picked up some take-away dinner so I could relax and have a bite while he has his "tea" on the river. I do hope he can catch something. As for me, it is really nice to stop moving for a while.

The cruise sounded incredible, in spite of the the weather, especially the venison & fish dinner. Looked at the Southern Alps album Lake Hawae and blue pools are exquisite. I was struck by the fact that there is little or no development--is it because it's a "nature reserve" or just that it is so far away? Thank you for your kind words about Max. My countdown two days--of course they are predicting stormy weather the day of our departure.
